8 Ways to Determine Her Ring Size

Here are 8 helpful tips to help you find your partner’s ring size and pull off your perfect engagement:

1. Take a Subtle & Fun Approach

One of the keys to finding your partner’s ring size measurement — without them catching on — is to do everything subtly.

Make your questions and comments tasteful, helping to gather the information you need, while still leaving something to the imagination.

“Remember to act natural when you’re forming a plan of this magnitude,” owner of Hannoush Jewelers Al Hannoush said half-jokingly. “This is one of the most precious moments of a long-lasting relationship, so following the right steps always helps keep the stress to a minimum.”

A simple gesture like comparing hand sizes can lead to comments like, “I never realized how different in size our hands are,” opening the door for a broader conversation on finger and ring sizes.

If your partner commonly wears rings, mention how much you like one of them and ask to try one on. If, and when, it doesn’t fit, jokingly say “Geez! What size are your fingers?” (Note: the average ring size for women is usually between 5 and 7).

This can help her to feel comfortable answering your questions without suspecting anything.

2. Ask Her Family & Friends

Sometimes your best shot may be recruiting family members or trusted friends to help crack the case.

Chances are, she has probably shared with her mother, sibling, or close friend her ring of choice and they may know her ring size as well. If the friend or family member does not know her size, but shares a similar build, ask them for their ring size measurement. This will help to give you a close estimate.

3. Borrow One of Her Rings

Borrowing one of her rings and bringing it to Hannoush Jewelers to be sized may be one the easiest ways to determine her ring size. However, you’ll have to take a few things into consideration with this option.

First, you’ll want to make sure that you don’t borrow a ring that she wears frequently. She’s likely to notice that it’s missing or might worry that she has lost it.

You’ll also need to pay attention to which rings she wears on which fingers. For instance, thumb or pinky rings will be to large or small in comparison to her ring finger. You’ll want to borrow one that will be truest to size.

4. Get Creative

Try to think a bit outside the box.

Make art projects together that require tracing your hands, make her a paper ring for fun (measure it to size before cutting it), or borrow and trace the inside of one of her rings.

Once you have either of these, come see an experienced jeweler to help you size your creative handiwork.

5. Take Some Sleepy Measurements

Is your girlfriend a deep sleeper?

If so, a quick and easy way to get her ring size is to take a piece of string and wrap it around her finger.

Cut the string to size and bring it in to an experienced jeweler to measure.

6. Take Her Ring Shopping

By this, of course, we mean ring shopping for someone else.

Suggest that you are going shopping for your mother or sister and would like her stylish opinion and advice.

If she shares a similar build, this is a great opportunity to have her test out different ring sizes without her growing suspicious. Have her try a few different styles, communicating to her that you want the ring to look good and fit well.

7. Just Ask Her

This may feel risky, but trust us, it will work out in the long run.

If marriage has been a topic of discussion between the two of you, then it certainly doesn’t hurt to ask the question.

Don’t worry, you can still make the proposal a surprise.

8. When in Doubt, Size Up

Remember, rings can always be resized.

If you’re unsure of what size she wears, round up — we can always resize it after she says yes!

More than anything, it’s important to remember to relax and enjoy putting together the surprise. This adventure is exciting and fun. It does not have to taxing or stressful.
