Weddings Back On in New York

Engagements and weddings are a time for joy and celebration.

But, as the events of the coronavirus pandemic unfolded at the start of 2020, brides and grooms across the nation were faced with the news of putting their plans on pause.

As restaurants, stores, and venues navigate reopening, engaged couples are hopeful that their big day can still happen this year, even if it looks a little different.

But there might be a light at the end of the tunnel for couples and vendors alike.

WEDDINGS ALLOWED IN NY RESTAURANTS
Couples looking to have their wedding during the COVID-19 pandemic might be in luck after all.

Though for many, it may mean a smaller guest list.

A federal judge in Syracuse, New York, overturned Governor Andrew Cuomo’s limit of 50 people at wedding receptions in restaurants.

Chief U.S. District Judge Glenn T. Suddaby issued the ruling on August 7, 2020, in a case involving a couple looking to host their wedding at The Sterling at Arrowhead Golf Club in Akron, Erie County.

The couple intended to celebrate with 110 guests, which would not have been possible under Cuomo’s previously set 50-person limit.

In its argument, the couple noted that the restaurant hosting the reception could run at half capacity, which is more than 50 people for the establishment. So, a wedding should be allowed to do the same, assuming other precautions are in place.

The claim also noted that other events, like demonstrations and outdoor graduations, were not limited to 50 people.

Thanks to the court ruling, the couple was able to celebrate that evening. And has given other couples hopes of celebrating with friends and family, as long as the restaurant is only filled to 50% capacity.

The 50-person limit for weddings was one of the executive orders Cuomo had put in place earlier this year because of the COVID-19 infection and death rate.

The overturned ruling appears to only apply to restaurants, rather than other venues that typically host receptions.

Banquet halls, for example, could use the ruling as a way to open the door to seek an end to the 50-person limit for those facilities as well, assuming they take the same precautions as restaurants.

PLANNING YOUR WEDDING
Although there is still a bit of uncertainty surrounding the virus and what will be allowed for ceremonies and receptions, this certainly gives brides and grooms hope if they planned a 2020 wedding.

And if you’ve planned a wedding for 2021, this will give venues, churches, and restaurants enough time to put a plan into place to keep you and your guests safe while fulfilling your dreams.

If there’s one thing we know for certain, it’s that Hannoush Jewelers will have the wedding bands you and your fiancé desire, and the jewelry to complete your wedding look.
